The Legends of the Redwoods 10k and 5K in Ukiah, California started in 2004. From the first year it was held to celebrate another race that was held in 1927 and 1928. In 1927 the “Legends Marathon” was promoted to celebrate both the new highway (101) that stretched between the two towns of Grants Pass, Oregon and San Francisco, California, and the athletic exploits of Native Americans. It would be the marathon to end all marathons.
The promoters decided that the athletes would all be Native Americans since they were “a people who historically had integrated running into their culture.” Towns along the route chose runners to represent them. The first race began on June 14, 1927 and was scheduled to finish in 15 days. The winner (a Karuk native) finished in 7 days, 12 hours, and 34 minutes. The following year the race was repeated with Flying Cloud setting a new course record in 6 days and 11 hours (the minutes are unknown). The 1929 stock market crash crushed hopes of continuing the marathon, but the Legend lives on.
Prize money was offered at checkpoints along the race ($35-100 depending on the down) as well as a $1000 award to the overall winner.
